It contains everything that made me fall in love with metal and rock when I was a kid. From Quiet Riot to the most bitchin’ hair styles to freaking Spinal Tap. Not to mention the general good will and generousness not often credited to the types of dudes you’ll see here. Watch and enjoy. It will be the coolest thing you’ve ever seen.
In 1985, Ronnie James Dio assembled an all-star crew for the Hear N’ Aid project in answer to Live Aid, which managed to exclude practically the entire hard rock and heavy metal community. The project’s idea originally came up when Jimmy Bain and Vivian Campbell visited KLOS-FM in Los Angeles, USA. They introduced the idea to Ronnie James Dio, who became interested in it too. They wrote a song called “Starz” together and invited a number of heavy metal artists to participate it.
On May 20th and 21st, 1985, about 40 artists from various heavy metal bands got together at A&M Records Studios to record “Starz”. The basic track was already laid down at Sound City Studios in Los Angeles, USA, by Dio and Frankie Banali of Quiet Riot.
All the income was donated to relieve famine in Africa and elsewhere in the world, and by mid 1987 the project had made $1,000,000.
This played on my iPod tonight in the car, and I have to say I honestly have no clue how it got there. I’ve never heard of this chick or this song. All I know is I love it.
The SoundExchange executive [Jon Simson, executive director] promised — in front of Congress — that SoundExchange will not enforce the new royalty rates. Webcasters will stay online, as new rates are hammered out.
Mark started this internet meme and nudged it over Taylor’s way, who passed it along to me: What’re the biggest musical skeletons in your closet?
Fiona Apple She’s just a basket case, but there’s something about her voice I like. Can’t stand lookin’ at her, though. I really hate admitting to that one.
Nick Cave I can stand looking at him, he’s kind of hot in a weird way, but he’s a horrible vocalist (something I used to really like about him, but slowly getting over that), and most of his music is pretty boring. Murder Ballads, however, has a draw I can’t stop listening to. His duets with Kylie Minogue and PJ Harvey are pretty awesome, though.
Garth Brooks Speaks for itself, but it reminds me of my adolescent years listening to CMT because MTV wasn’t an option, and finding myself enjoying country music at the time.
Nickelback One song. I won’t even admit which one.
Last, and most certainly least, Kelly Clarkson. Shh.
Like Mark, I’m not going to tag anyone specifically for this. If you read this, let’s hear yours, then leave a comment with a link to your post.
According to The Local (Sweden’s news in English), there is hope for us!

A Swedish heavy metal fan has had his musical preferences officially classified as a disability. The results of a psychological analysis enable the metal lover to supplement his income with state benefits.
Roger Tullgren, 42, from from Hässleholm in southern Sweden has just started working part time as a dishwasher at a local restaurant.
Because heavy metal dominates so many aspects of his life, the Employment Service has agreed to pay part of Tullgren’s salary. His new boss meanwhile has given him a special dispensation to play loud music at work.
The future of Internet radio is in immediate danger. Royalty rates for webcasters have been drastically increased by a recent ruling and are due to go into effect on July 15 (retroactive to Jan 1, 2006!). To protest these rates and encourage the millions of net radio listeners to take action and contact their Congressional representatives, a national Day of Silence will be held June 26. Webcasters across the country will observe this day of silence in a number of ways, including dedicating entire programs to the campaign to save Internet Radio and broadcasting complete silence. For an updated list of the participants in this national day of silence, visit http://www.kurthanson.com/dos/. Webcasters who would like to participate in the day of silence, place contact the SaveNetRadio coalition at dayofsilence@savenetradio.org. Net radio listeners, please excuse the interruption of your normal programming and take action to ensure this silence is not permanent. Call your Congressional Representatives today.
Contact your Senators or Representatives and tell them to support The Internet Radio Equality Act H.R. 2060, that was introduced by Representatives Jay Inslee (D-WA) and Donald Manzullo (R-IL).

Excuse me while I go over there to do a dance of joy.
First, Ozzy does not disappoint. Black Rain (at least the handful of songs I’ve heard from it) is fantastic. Update, I’ve now heard the whole thing and I’m all back in silly love with Ozzy again.
The devastatingly heavy and hilariously bizarre new concept album from Devin Townsend. One of the most prolific and colorful characters in the world of metal.
